An eight-day journey through the heart of Champagne with winemaker
Ian Leamon
Behind doors most visitors never reach.
Grande Maison and boutique growers — Tour de Champagne takes you inside, to taste a dazzling array of champagnes and to dine at tables you could never book yourself.
A land-only package: you arrive into Reims, and from welcome drinks to the farewell at Taittinger, everything in between is arranged.
A rare seat at the source of Champagne.
Eight houses over seven unhurried days — some that don't open their doors to anyone else. Strictly ten guests, hosted by winemaker Ian Leamon.
Arrival day. Check in to Hotel de la Paix (4-star), centrally located in Reims. The day is yours to explore the city. In the evening, join your fellow guests for welcome drinks in the hotel champagne bar, followed by dinner at a nearby restaurant. Dinner and wines included.
Visit the legendary Veuve Clicquot cellars. Lunch at Veuve Clicquot's Manoir de Verzy with a six-course matched menu. Evening free.
Travel by coach to the village of Aÿ for a tour and tasting at Henri Giraud — a family house doing extraordinary things with wood maturation. Check in to Hotel Castel Jeanson. Lunch with the Goutorbe family: their lunches are legendary for the warmth of the welcome and the quality of the champagnes poured.
A leisurely morning followed by a 10.30am visit to Champagne Deutz — founded in 1853 and located a mere 100 metres from the hotel. Tour the cellars, then enjoy lunch in the President's dining room in the stunning Deutz mansion. The afternoon is free to explore Aÿ and Épernay.
A scenic coach drive along the Vallée de la Marne to the village of Festigny. Tour the vineyard and cellars with Jean-Philippe or Alice Loriot, learning about the role of Pinot Meunier in the valley. Lunch with the Loriot family; all wines matched to the meal.
Return to Reims and Hotel de la Paix. Two exceptional visits: Charles Heidsieck — which does not conduct public tours, making this a genuinely rare privilege — and Ruinart, the oldest champagne house, celebrated for its stunning chalk crayères and its commitment to Chardonnay. Group dinner this evening; dinner and wines included.
A free day to explore Reims — visit the Gothic cathedral, browse the famous Saturday market, or simply relax with a glass in hand. The tour concludes with a gala dinner at Taittinger, one of Reims' great champagne dynasties, with the full Taittinger range poured across the meal.
Make your way home. The Reims railway station is within walking distance; TGV connections serve Paris, CDG airport, Strasbourg, and Lille. Chauffeured transfers to CDG can be arranged. If flying from CDG, book departures after 13:00 to allow comfortable travel time.
